Day 1 – Mont Choisy Golf
Following the success of the 2017 edition, the 2018 Vanilla Islands Pro Am kicked off this Saturday 8 December at the Mont Choisy Golf Club in Mauritius. After a 3-day stopover in the north of the island, the tournament will move on to the Tamarina Golf Estate and the Avalon Golf Estate next week.
When you think of world-class golf courses, Mauritius and the Indian Ocean immediately spring to mind.
This morning, some fifteen teams from France took over the Mont Choisy Golf Club with two aims in mind: to enjoy a holiday in the Indian Ocean and to indulge their passion for golf.
As soon as they set foot on the green, the participants were dazzled by Mont Choisy. The sunny course, designed by Peter Matkovich, features a variety of landscapes, showcasing the unique black Mauritian volcanic rock throughout all 18 holes. Alongside the diverse vegetation, this exceptional course is also set apart by its ponds and bunkers.
All 60 participants got off to a great start, making the most of the glorious sunshine. From the chilly French winter to a sunny holiday: everyone’s a winner!
Day 2 – Mont Choisy Golf
The second leg of the Vanilla Islands Pro Am Golf 2018 began this Sunday in a calm friendly atmosphere. After exploring the course yesterday, the teams started this second day with confidence. Good performances were therefore expected.
Although the sun was taking a break today, the wind didn’t fail to spice up the game and seemed to bring a few (good) surprises, with the presence of wildlife which had, as we recall, enlivened the first edition. Some teams actually told us that they had come across dogs sunbathing in a bunker at the 15th hole, and others who seemed to be looking for lost balls…
Although far from Mont Choisy, our friends the monkeys from the Tamarina Golf Club seemed eager to meet up with us again. Some made an appearance on the golfers’ bags while they were waiting for next week!
Day 3 – Mont Choisy Golf
It was in a musical ambience and atmosphere that the players boarded the shuttle service for the third round of the Vanilla Islands Pro Am Golf Tournament 2018. This day marked the end of the first Mauritian stage of the tour, held at the Mont Choisy Golf Club.
The participants, who were impressed by the high quality of both the course and the service, were beginning to show the first signs of fatigue. Even after three days of competition, however, the teams still gave everything they had and were able to brave Mauritius’s tropical climate, with the weather ranging from hot sunshine to light seasonal rain.
To bring the first stage to an end, and before the switch to a different golf course, an awards evening was held at the LUX* Grand Gaube resort. The players were delighted with the numerous prizes on offer from our partners Callaway, Gigaset and Mont Choisy Golf Club. To win any of the various bags, golf clubs, mobile phones and baseball caps up for grabs, competitors needed to have put in a good performance.
In gross score terms, the team made up of Laurent MARCICKI, François BRIVAL and Antoine MACQUET, and led by pro-golfer Olivier AUBERT, achieved second place at this intermediate ranking stage, with a score of 129 points. It was the team consisting of Patrice BARQUEZ, Richard PELISSERO, Jean-Loup DUVAIL and Benjamin LEGUEU that finished in first place, with 137 points.
In net score terms, third place went to our friends from the Île de Ré, led by pro-golfer Stanislas CATURLA, with a score of 169 points. The team made up of pro-golfer Antoine SCHWARTZ and his fellow team-mates Max CUBIT, Eric DE BIASIO and Pascal BARIOT finished in second position with 172 points.
Additionally, and with their polo shirts featuring the dodo, the emblem of Mauritius, they also won the prize for the course’s best team uniform. Finally, and finishing in first place with a score of 180 points, came the competition’s only team from Réunion, made up of pro Jean-Philippe WELTER, Daniel CONDINA, Alexis BOUTRY and Stéphane PAIRAULT.
And as is now the tradition at the Vanilla Islands Pro Am, the team finishing last in the rankings also received a prize. They’ll no doubt be pulling out all the stops to improve their position over the second stage.
There are now three days of the tournament remaining, with these due to take place at the Tamarina and Avalon golf clubs. Let’s hope the rest of the competition has plenty of surprises in store for us.
Day 4 – Tamarina
The Vanilla Islands Pro Am Tours 2018 takes place in the west of Mauritius during 3 days of competition at Tamarina Golf and at Avalon. As always, the participants received a warm welcome from everyone. The first day took place in a light-hearted mood on a sunny course that our participants once again fell in love with.
After an opening evening at Sugar Beach that set the tone, the players were delighted to find themselves once again on the sublime golf course of Tamarina in the morning. This 18-hole Par 72 championship course was designed by architect Rodney Wright. It mixes technical and spectacular natural scenery, with superb views of the Rempart mountain and the Tamarin Bay.
While yesterday, the players on reconnaissance met a mother and her baby, the monkeys remained hidden today; well, almost… Some found ways of revealing themselves to us.
With regards to results, hats-off to the performance of amateur Jean-François LAZZARI on the “closest to the pin” of the signature hole, number 13, at 3.77 m.
Overall, the team of Patrice BARQUEZ and his teammates Richard PELISSERO, Jean-Loup DUVAIL and Benjamin LEGEU remain at the top by winning the first place of the day and keeping the overall lead. The Antoine SCHWARTZ pro team, comprising Max CUBIT, Eric de BIASO and Pascal BARIOT, is in second place with a score of 73. They are also today’s net winners with a score of 89. The team is getting closer to 1st place in the Net general classification.
Teams are sure to give everything tomorrow on the Avalon stage, a first in the Vanilla Islands Pro Am Tours 2018.
Day 5 – Avalon
One of the new additions to the Vanilla Islands Pro Am Tours 2018. The penultimate day of the tournament took place on the Avalon Golf Estate course, located on inland Mauritius. With the sun shining as they met, the teams quickly forgot their 5th day tiredness, and got down to making the most of the magnificent golfing.
After a lovely group photo, a shotgun sounded to mark the beginning of the day.
The Avalon Golf Estate is among one of the newest golf courses on the Island of Mauritius, in the heart of Bois Chéri, known for its tea plantations.
Designed by the famous South African architect Peter Matkovitch, the course spreads over the hills that overhang the island’s coastlines. It shows off the varied, luxuriant vegetation that gives the area the appearance of a beautiful tropical garden.
The palm trees blend with colourful flowers, ferns, ravines and aromatic plants. A real delight for the players, who were filled with wonder as they enjoyed an incredible day there.
In spite of challenging holes and sometimes blind plays, the golfers showed us some beautiful play. There was a standing ovation for Richard PELISSERO who scored a fabulous eagle ‘drive put’ on the 4th hole. His team greeted him with hugs.
Several teams stood out today! Birdies flourished on the course…
The team of pro Olivier AUBERT, made up of Laurent MARCICKI, François BRIVAL and Antoine MACQUET took home both the Net and the Gross. With a total of 78 gross and 97 net points, their shouts of joy could be heard all over the course.
There was very little separating the teams at the top of the leader board! Tomorrow will be a decisive day. Everything is still to play for, the Vanilla Islands Pro Am Tours 2018 has us on tenterhooks right until the end!
